The objective of the programme Master of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology is to provide top-quality university multidisciplinary education in nanoscience as well as in the use of nano-technologies for systems and sensors at the macro-scale. Ethical and societal aspects with respect to the use of nanoscience and nanomaterials are also part of this curriculum.
The EMM program aims to provide:
- top-quality education in nanoscience and nanotechnology
- ethical & societal aspects of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. The EMM-nano addresses the societal aspects of nanotechnology: a series of international seminars allows all students in all locations of the consortium to learn about the societal aspects of nanotechnology and discuss these with researchers and policy makers.
- multidisciplinarity: the challenge is to instil in the students the power to communicate and think across the boundaries of the traditional scientific disciplines. Notably, the aim is not to educate "multispecialists". Students receive a basic training in all disciplines, and choose a specialization within one of these disciplines. Special courses are designed to offer a multidisciplinary view on this research field.
- mobility: The EMM-nano is a two-year/two-location programme: students spend one year per location; the first year all students spend at K.U.L., the second year at one of the other partner universities.
- Strong research connections: students spend one fourth of the programme on their own research project in a research environment of internationally renowned quality; course modules are strongly related to ongoing research and are taught by research professionals.
- complementary curricula at all consortium partners: thematic differences reflect the local research strengths.
- integrated programme: the consortium partners have one educational concept; core subjects are offered to all students irrespective of the location they choose. A Virtual Classroom is created to ensure a fast and simple exchange of course modules and promote international integration.
