TU Dresden has a long successful tradition in engineering
and materials science. Due to the establishment of the interdisciplinary
Masters Course “Molecular Bioengineering” in 2002, and a joint
Max Planck Institute/TU Dresden PhD programme, the TU Dresden now has
a strong standing in Molecular Bioengineering and Molecular Biotechnology
education. Both the organisation and the contents of the course are based
on a new educational concept aiming for state-of-the-art education in
cutting edge science and technology by a truly international faculty.
The course is not organized by a single department but by a new biotechnological
research centre (BIOTEC) within the university. The biotechnological research
centre regroups staff from different engineering and sciences disciplines.
The TU Dresden has a strong position in Molecular Bioengineering and Molecular
Biotechnology. The establishment of the Biotechnical centre (BIOTEC) of
the TU Dresden is supported by 5 new professorships (Genomics, Proteomics,
Cellular Machines, Biophysics and Bioinformatics). BIOTEC is an interdisciplinary
research centre with aims at building bridges between molecular and cellular
biology and the engineering sciences. It is intensively cooperating with
other institutes at the university and with other research institutes
established in Dresden, especially the Max Planck Institute for Molecular
Cell Biology and Genetics, the Max Bergmann centre of Biomaterials and
the Medical Theoretical Centre. The scientific activities of BIOTEC are
united with the economic activities of young biotechnology enterprises
under the common roof of the Bio Innovations Centre Dresden.
